Published 18th February 2016 – Spring: An Anthology for the Changing Seasons
“In prose and poetry both old and new, Spring mirrors the unfolding of the season, inviting us to see what’s around us with new eyes. Featuring original writing by Rob Cowen, Miriam Darlington and Stephen Moss, classic extracts from the work of George Orwell, Clare Leighton and H. E. Bates, and fresh new voices from across the UK, this is an original and inspiring collection of nature writing that brings the British springtime to life in all its vivid glory.”

The Wildlife Trust website were advertising for written submissions that encapsulated the feeling of each season. Well, way back in August, I sent in a proposal for a story that I wanted to write about the Dippers that I had watched along the riverside over a few weeks whilst at university. A couple of weeks later I heard back from the lovely lady organising the submissions, and discovered that they wanted my piece. They are making a book for each season, but my piece was best suited for Spring which is great because it was published first ha!

Over the next few weeks I settled down to write, tweaking paragraphs left right and centre until I felt completely happy with it. Sent the writing before the deadline, and had a few chats about the edits and small changes that were necessary. They lady I spoke to primarily was really helpful with the process, and I just loved being a part of this book.

Super proud of myself for sending that very first submission off, because I almost didn’t do it. Would my work really be good enough? Well, would you look at that. It was chosen, and I have my name and writing in a book. Look at me there, nestled in between old William Shakespeare and Charlotte Bronte!

I’m about half way through reading Spring, and I’m loving it. There’s just such a wide variety of writing in here, and I’m enjoying discovering old nature writers that I’d never read before. It is equally amazing to read the works of people similar to me, and those already in the profession of nature writing. If you’re interesting in the natural world and descriptive writing, then I definitely recommend this book! Let me know if you do check it out.
