How to get your running mojo back.

It has been two months since I ran the Great Manchester Run. Two months in which I ran only once, until this week. It happened the first time I ran a 10k race, except that first time it took me over 6 months to get running again. I’m not completely sure why it happens, but it’s something that I’m definitely working on!

So how do you get that running motivation back?


Honestly, without something to aim for, I find it difficult to get myself out there. I like competition, so with something to aim for I can really push myself. Right now I’m not signed up for any races, but there is a local 10k happening on September 6th, and I’m thinking about doing it. Nothing set in stone, but the thought is there. The main goal really is to better my 10k time of 61 minutes. I’d love to get sub-60, so right now that is my main goal.


If I hadn’t created myself a routine on Google calendar, I don’t think I would have pushed myself out of that door as easily. With google calendar, I can see what I’m supposed to be doing when I log onto my laptop, when I go onto my tablet and when I go onto my phone. The reminder is always there. It tells me that I promised myself I would run, and it makes me want to get out.
Obviously, if I’m feeling terrible, or sick I won’t push myself to go out – my health is important – but if the problem is just pure laziness, there’s something there to remind me. Having a schedule also lets you plan ahead, and you can fit that running time in whenever you’re available. But I also want to stress that having a schedule is like a guideline, and it’s not the end of the world if you can’t do that run. If something comes up, just change the time/day or miss it out. Don’t get too het up about doing that run. At the end of the day, it isn’t supposed to be a chore – it’s supposed to be fun!

Here’s this months calendar… My planned runs are in purple because it’s the colour code that I use for fitness in my Filofax. Always organised eh ;) I’ve also started to try scheduling writing/posting my blog posts, but that’s still a trial at the moment!

I posted about needing to get back into my running on tumblr, and a lovely person told me about the #summerrunnin tag. It was filled with posts from people who were running, and helping to motivate each other. Perfect! Knowing that others were about to give me that push, I immediately joined in with posting, and received some lovely comments and motivation. Posting each run with that hash tag is really helping with the motivation, and seeing others posting what they’ve done is also helpful!

It would be nice to have someone in person to run with, but hey, can’t get everything that you want! If you know someone wanting to get fit/healthier, ask them to join you. You’ll be surprised at how much more you get out knowing there’s someone else with you – whether that’s in person or talking to someone online. And hey, if anyone wants to chat with me about running and share stories/challenges or even for a little moan, I’m here and waiting!
