A Healthy Food Hamper

Last week when I was holiday I got a lovely tweet telling me I’d won a competition! Now that at least was something good to come home to! The lovely Heather (who actually guest posted on my blog not so long ago!) had a competition going with Discount Supplements to win a healthy food hamper, and the huge box was there waiting for me on my bed – so of course I dug right in!

Bare Naked Rice & Noodles + Lucy Bee Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil
Yogi Detox & Cranberry Hibiscus Tea + Meridian Organic Smooth Peanut Butter

I think I first need to acknowledge the size of that peanut butter – it’s HUGE! It was all wrapped up in bubble wrap and honestly I thought it’d be the coconut oil because that tends to come in big jars… Nope, it was just a 1kg tub of peanut butter.

So on the website, the noodles specification says this: Low carbs, High fibre, No sugar, Low calorie, Gluten Free, Wheat free Suitable for Vegetarians, Dairy free and Halal approved. This obviously will appeal to many people who are watching their calories and other food intake. For me it’s probably not something I would choose often – I like my carbs! The taste was strange to begin with, but that’s because I was comparing them to egg noodles or rice noodles. The Bare Naked ones are a little chewier, but the taste is fine. Taste-wise, they’re just like any old noodle really. They go perfectly well in a stir fry! I have only tried the noodles so far, but the rice also boasts sugar, fat and gluten free as well as low carb and low calorie.

There’s not much to say about coconut oil really! I used this to cook the veggies in for my stir fry, and it’s actually the first time I have used coconut oil to cook. Worked very well! I have actually been oil pulling a couple of times a week with coconut oil that I already have, so I may try that to see if the tastes differ. The good thing about this Lucy Bee one is that it has no preservatives, GMOs or Additives and is 100% fair trade, organic and raw. My other oil is raw, but doesn’t boast all these other things, so the Lucy Bee one is the one I’ll likely use for cooking with and the other I’ll stick with teeth/hair stuff.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the size of this tub! My mum and auntie were very happy when they spotted it in the kitchen… Made of natural ingredients, there is no palm oil (something I really need to be more wary of!) and with the only ingredient being peanuts there’s no hidden nasties. Also organic, this peanut butter is suitable for both vegetarians and vegans. Now I’m not a peanut butter or vegan expert, so I’m not sure if other peanut butters are not vegan… Anyway, it tasted good and it won’t just be me eating this whole tub! I don’t think it’ll last very long in this house.

So I may have gotten really excited when I spotted a tea with cinnamon as a flavouring… I just love cinnamon! Although it says cinnamon on the box, the website states that the Detox tea contains sweet Liquorice and Spicy Ginger, combined with Dandelion and Burdock Root. Cardamom, coriander, sage and fennel have also been added. So no cinnamon? Regardless, it was delicious and definitely made my bus journey to work yesterday more bearable! (Who doesn’t hate using public transport on school days?!)

The second tea, Positive Energy Cranberry Hibiscus, has Green Mate, Guarana & Assam Black with added hibiscus, cranberry, rose hip and lemon myrtle. Not as strong as the first, this tea was also great, and went done nicely with my rice and beans last night! Both of these teas have organic ingredients, and I think I’ll definitely be purchasing more Yogi Tea flavours.

And here are the bare naked noodles in action. I reckon they look like an in between of egg noodles and spaghetti…

All in all, very happy with my prize from Discount Supplements! I’ve been looking more on the website, and there’s some great stuff on there, with good prices too! I also want to add that I haven’t been asked to write this – it’s just something that I am sharing because I’m happy I won, and I’ve really enjoyed trying this stuff – and thanks to Heather for running the competition!
