2/3 Marathon Training – When Things Don’t Quite Go to Plan

Part 1 Part 3

Time for an update! I’ve always thought marathon training would be very intense, and I wasn’t wrong. It is. But I’m also enjoying it and seeing how far I can push.

The Running

So. August was a bit of a mixed month really for running.

The past couple of months have been quite busy on the weekends, and I’ve really struggled trying to fit two runs in, especially when they’re both above the 10km mark. Some of my longer runs, both midweek and weekend, are now between 2-3 hours long. It doesn’t seem like it, but that takes a lot of time out when you have to factor in the before and the after too when you have other plans! I’ve been trying to prioritise the longer runs because that’s the important mileage.

The month started okay, but all of a sudden I was getting a sore foot after running. I managed to complete the Rock n Roll Dublin Half Marathon though, and that felt alright. I’ve since spoke to coaches and we’re wondering if it’s pressure from my trainers on the top of my foot.

Still, not fun to get swelling after long runs and have a really achy foot for a couple of days afterwards. I completed my longest run so far at 29 km and my foot was not impressed the day after.

September’s goal is to sort that out and hopefully stop it from happening. Luckily, I’m not experiencing any actual sharp pains or anything, Just aches.

The good news is that it has been shorts weather for most of my runs recently.

2019 STATS SO FAR

  • 123 runs
  • 134 hrs 39 mins run
  • 1,138.3km // 707.3 miles
  • 1 pair of trainers completely worn out, now wearing separate road and trail shoes
  • 2 blisters
  • 0 toenails lost

The Strength Training

Ha. Strength training. Remember when I said I was going to try harder?

I have done bits here and there, but nowhere near enough to class as strength training I think. I definitely struggle with this balance and I cam’t find any more excuses. I’m just not getting it done.

The upside is, once my marathon is over I will be lowering the running mileage for a bit of a break and this is when I can focus more on strength. It’ll happen at some point.

Anyone else training for something?
